John Verberg enamel box, Troy NH circa 1915. This signed and numbered box is part of a series we have seen with the same mark, a conjoined JV which we now attribute to the master craftsman, John Verberg. Verberg was a metalworker and jeweler residing in New Hampshire who only exhibited sporadically, yet his work as a Craftsman with the Boston Society of Arts & Crafts was of such quality between 1906 and 1913, that he was elevated to Master Craftsman status that year, continuing as a member making objects until 1925. The work we have seen, including this box are at the level only attained by the best craftsmen of the time. The copper box with hinged opening and clasp is adorned with a rich enamel of a red bird in flight over greenery. Each corner is decorated with blue enamel cabachons set in copper mounts. The enamel is in very good condition, there are some fracture lines under the surface which were created in the firing process (smooth to touch). The box is signed with JV mark and number “765”. One other box we have seen is signed with a “3” and is a classic early Boston enamel poppy design. The listing below is taken from the official Society of Arts & Crafts member list publication. Measures 4.75” wide, 3.5” deep and 1.5” tall. SOLD
