GUSTAV STICKLEY
Most consider Gustav Stickley the father of American Arts & Crafts with the work from his Craftsman Workshops held in the highest esteem. His furniture shop began around 1900 with his Craftsman Magazine launching in 1901, quickly spreading the ideals & design aesthetic of the Arts & Crafts movement. On a visit to England in 1903, Stickley purchased several dozen pieces of metalwork & lighting from The Art Fittings Ltd firm in London which formed the basis of his new copper & iron metal shop output. It has recently come to light that these forms were in fact designed & made by Norman & Ernest Spittle of Birmingham. A period Spittle catalog has been found and reveals a wealth of information on their production, be sure to visit the Spittle / Art Fittings page here.
