DOUGLAS DONALDSON

Douglas Donaldson was one of the most important metalworkers during the first half of the 20th Century. His early career started at the Minneapolis Handicraft Guild before following his mentor, Ernest Batchelder to Pasadena in 1909. By 1911 he was the head of the Manual Arts high School in Los Angeles & then Otis Art Institute, teaching his designs & crafts to students. In addition, he would hold Summer Schools at his Melrose Hill home for many years. He exhibited widely and won many Gold Medals for his work. Most of his early material is unsigned which would explain why his name is not more widely known today. He worked in hammered copper & silver and adored his pieces with enamels and stones.
