Douglas Van Denburgh, mirror with candle sconce, Los Gatos CA, 1903. Van Denburgh was a major figure in California Arts & Crafts having founded the first Arts & Crafts Guild in the state in 1903, see images of his work from their 2nd annual exhibition in 1904. In August of 1903 he was featured in a major spread of The Craftsman Magazine along with images of his candlesticks including a near identical version of this form (see images). Ernest Batchelder selected the crafts workers to appear in the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair and chose a stick from Van Denburgh calling him a “thorough craftsman.” No other object has appeared from this shop, incredibly, this form bears a fragile paper label on the reverse. A wonderful item from the early days of Arts & Crafts in California. Measures 12” tall by 7” wide by 6” deep. SOLD
