Norman & Ernest Spittle / Art Fittings Ltd umbrella stand, England circa 1903. The Spittle brothers were the firm behind Art Fittings where Gustav Stickley purchased several items while visiting London, which became the foundation of the designs he put into production in his own shop. A hammered copper four sided umbrella stand with an incredible amount of construction, craftsmanship and detail. Each side with a large repoussé stylized floral pattern, very reminiscent of several cataloged Spittle forms. The edges have riveted joints which end in flared legs, another design element found in their work. Spittle was also one of the few firms in England to apply a dark patina to their copper work. The top has a large rolled rim and the enclosed bottom holds a removable handled tin drip pan. Although unsigned as with all Spittle work, we are confident in this attribution. Measures 27.5” tall and top is 11.5” square. SOLD
