Joseph Heinrichs for Shreve & Company “14th Century” silver service chest, San Fransisco CA circa 1904. A massive and heavy silver service chest, likely custom ordered by a client from Shreve to house a 12 piece service of 14th Century silver as the copper straps are done in the pattern. Shreve would have ordered from Joseph Heinrichs who crafted objects for major retailers across the country, they worked in oak embellished with hammered copper and silver rivets as seen here. The top lifts open on hinges to reveal a large gallery for service pieces with the original platforms and red felt finish. Each of the four drawers also contain the same finish work, yet all of these can be removed if you’d like to store objects like tiles, metalwork, woodblocks etc. The hammered copper is applied as top hinges and a handle which is signed SHREVE & CO, copper side handles, copper finger pulls on each drawer, lower copper corner protection cushions and a central copper panel with a subtle etched D monogram. The oak is in excellent condition and appears to be an original finish, the copper retains the original patina and all but one of the large hammered silver rivets are intact. Interior with mild mothball odor, may need a professional cleaning or removal of felt interior. A masterwork of the Arts & Crafts movement and likely the only known example. Measures 28” wide, 20” tall and 21” deep. SOLD
