Paul Elder & Morgan Shepard large copper vase, San Francisco circa 1901. A very rare & early California Arts & Crafts hammered copper vase from the famous bookshop of Paul Elder. Paul Elder was the earliest proponent of Arts & Crafts in California having opened his shop in 1897 and handling art objects from Jarvie, Teco, Newcomb, Toothaker and many more for the next decade. Paulelder.org confirmed the D.P. Elder mark would date this vase to 1900 or 1901 only as he stopped using the D in his name in 1902. There are period photos (below & on this link) of the shop from this period showing large copper vessels on shelfs, other images of the shop show a wide array of Arts & Crafts material. This was likely commissioned by Elder from a local San Fransisco craftsman like Van Erp, a very important historical vase from the California Arts & Crafts Movement. Overall great condition for its size & age, some minor bumps to body, wonderful patina & hammering throughout. Measures 16” tall and body is 11” wide. SOLD
