Busck Studios sconce, Brooklyn NY dated 1901. An incredibly rare and important hammered copper sconce from this small craft studio in New York. Busck Studios was started by the Danish immigrants Gunni J. Busck and his sister, Amalie Busck and later joined by his wife, Charlotte Howell Busck focusing on copper and leather work. The studio was the first Arts & Crafts metalwork studio to have an article focused on them in the Craftsman Magazine in May of 1902 where this sconce was pictured (see photos and link HERE). The studio also had major articles written about them in House Beautiful (November 1903, sconce pictured), House & Garden (Nov 1902), Keramic Studio (May 1903) as well as many newspaper articles discussing their work. The Buscks were also central to the founding of The Guild of Arts & Crafts of New York in 1903 as well as The National Society of Craftsmen in 1906.
This large copper sconce is made of two sheets of copper with the repoussé design on the outer layer which is folded over around the edges. The piece retains its original patina and is in mint condition. The signature is two B’s around an S and dated 1901, perhaps the first one made at the studio given the published dates of the articles. Measures 15” tall and 7” wide. $3,500
